The Truth-Teller

Scriptural truth-telling is sorely lacking these days. Much like the media’s “fake news” surrounding us, the bypassing of biblical truth is prevalent in “sugar-coated” sermons. Many pastors, it seems, find it easier to attract, and subsequently keep a congregation by assuring them that God is an unconditional and immediate forgiver of sin.

This supposition misleads a congregation seeking the real meaning of God’s Word. The truth is that God loves his children dearly. However, he does not tolerate reprobate (unrepentant) behavior.

The Bible tells us Jesus Christ forgives the sin of his children. Yes…Jesus is the great Forgiver. However, to preach that one is forgiven automatically, without repentance, is a lie. Preachers who pass this information on do a disservice to their congregation.

Telling a congregation nonchalantly that God forgives them unconditionally is wrong. This dismisses personal responsibility for the heaviness of one’s sin. Forgiveness does not come wrapped up with a bow. It is also not guaranteed. True repentance is a result of the shame we feel for letting God down, for violating his commandments. It is recognition of the fact that we are unworthy of being in our Saviour’s presence at that time. This sorrow brings about regret and our request for divine mercy. God’s subsequent forgiveness is his choice. His forgiveness is an unearned gift.

Let us not misrepresent “The Good News” as “Fake News”.

2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
