Social media…We all tend to use it. It calls to mind filtered selfies, watching entertaining videos and connecting with friends and family. It gives us a voice. We can publicly announce our opinions; and hope secretly for “likes”. These “likes” boost our self-esteem. Everyone wants to be approved of and noticed. However, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the only “likes” that should matter are those of Jesus Christ. It is those we ought to seek.
Social media is not a source of innocent fun for a Christian. It seldom promotes Christianity and when doing so it often blasphemously ridicules Jesus, or the Bible. When it does mention Christianity, it promotes the faith superficially, rarely backing it up with true biblical verse. Repentance and the dangers of hell are, in general, not addressed.
Idol worship is another danger of social media. We find people obsessing over the smallest details of their favorite celebrities’ lives. Fans wonder what they eat, wear and who they are dating. Not only are celebs idolized; but so also are “regular people”. Women place filters over their faces to look more appealing. They pose suggestively in bikinis, displaying their bodies to their “followers”.
The only person who should be followed with such intensity is Jesus Christ. His importance in our lives should surpass that of some social media sensation. Scripture tells us specifically not to place our trust in idols:
1 John 5:21 KJV
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Social media can be a device of Satan. It lures us into a land of worldly pleasures when we should be spending our time in God’s Word. Our attention needs to directed to Bible study and fervent prayer. Social media serves as an unwelcome distraction.
Be honest, how many hours each day do you scroll through social media? Way too many I bet. I know I do. Why are we wasting our time on such a worthless activity?
Let’s put our attention back where it matters – on Jesus Christ
