Who among us has not felt the familiar sting of jealousy? Christians are not immune from it. We secretly begrudge another’s looks, talents or material advantages. Unfortunately, it is part of human nature to crave that which we don’t have in our possession.
However, Jealousy is an affront to God. In fact, “Do not covet” is one of his ten commandments. Coveting what is another’s expresses a lack of appreciation for our own blessings. It is the hallmark of an ungrateful heart.
The Bible clearly states that we ought to celebrate one another’s achievements:
1 Corinthians 12:26 KJV
And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
A bitter heart does not find favor in the eyes of the Lord. He has bestowed upon each of us considerable gifts. One person’s blessings may not be as outward as another’s. Nevertheless, our importance to God is never to be measured by the scope of material items. We also should not compare our gifts to another’s.
As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are one family. Our aim should be to lift another up, not tear each other down. Loving one another is at the heart of Christianity:
John 13:34 KJV
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Let us celebrate our differences, rather than feeding the bitter spirit of jealousy. Thus we will glorify God.
