Unflattering Jesus Memes

ree

I initially laughed when it caught my eye. It’s a common Meme; rampant among Facebook and the such. Basically, it’s an image of Jesus, seemingly peeking at the viewer. The message contained reads, “I saw that.” In other words, Jesus Christ is represented as some sort of Social Media “Big Brother”, not in a lovingly protective manner, but in a “wait til I tell Mom” kind of way. Now, we Christians know (or ought to) that Jesus is not perched somewhere, eagerly waiting for us to screw up, just so he can sit back smugly. Jesus does not point fingers in condemnation.

That is not his intention towards his children.

But wait… perhaps, just perhaps, that Meme is indicative of his attitude towards the truly wicked.? The Bible does say that God laughs at the Wicked. Perhaps we should look at that Meme as something which should be aimed at them:

Ephesians 6:12 KJV

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Jesus does not creep about the internet, only to pop up on social media timelines. He is not a cosmic prankster. He offers loving correction, not shaming condemnation to his children. Is he grieved by sin? You bet. However, he does not excitedly rub his hands together, eagerly awaiting your fall.

But…Guess who does? That’s right - Satan and his Agents. Unfortunately, the more negative the message regarding Jesus, the more online clicks ensue. That would include messages belittling Jesus’ actions (for the sake of fun of course), or those mocking his meeker side. However, let us not forget that Jesus Christ will be returning as Conquering Lion to judge mankind and its adversaries.

And he will NOT be playing Peek-a-Boo…
